The Cock Inn in Birdwell has long been a place where people gather for good food and a real sense of belonging. Rooted in history and shaped by the locals around it, the pub has been at the heart of the community for many years. With Sal and Rachel closing the venue on Sunday 18 January, many are reflecting on what made it so special.

The final Friday brought emotional goodbyes as customers gathered for one last visit. With a final steak ordered, the people around were sharing fond farewells, making the evening feel even more poignant and the steak was, of course, absolutely banging.

The couple’s journey with The Cock Inn began with an unexpected connection. Sal, who supplied chicken to the restaurant trade, met Rachel. Their shared passion for hospitality quickly grew into a dream venture. Before taking over The Cock Inn, they brought a wealth of experience. Owning a 280-seat steakhouse and supplying restaurants gave them the insight and drive to make The Cock Inn a standout destination.

Even in tough times the focus remained on the locals. Free pints for isolated residents, festivals and Reggae nights were just some of the ways the team supported the community. The support of staff and patrons helped Sal and Rachel stay determined through tough moments. When the local community rallied behind them, including support from The Yorkshire Indian, it was overwhelming in the best way. Their menu also won hearts, with curries made from scratch by Sal and his team and Onion Bhajis that became a local favourite.

Getting engaged at The Cock Inn was obviously one of Rachel’s most special memories. It happened in the middle of a Reggae night on 30 March 2024, marking one year since they took over the pub and the same day they had taken on the steakhouse, making the moment even more meaningful.

While Sal and Rachel will not miss the difficulties they faced, they will deeply miss their loyal customers and dedicated staff. Public reaction to the closure has been emotional, with many expressing sadness at the news. The future of The Cock Inn is still uncertain, but Sal and Rachel are moving on to new chapters. Sal is returning to wholesale, and Rachel is going back to horse training.

Although Sal and Rachel have now moved on from The Cock Inn, they are keeping a connection with the locals through their Facebook page, which they are transforming into The Hoof and Paws Project. The page will raise funds to support animal owners in need, and it will not cost followers a penny to get involved. From unexpected vet bills to a bale of hay when it is needed most, the project aims to provide a little help when life gets tough because everyone experiences hard times. Through free competitions, helpful tips, or simply engaging with posts, followers can continue to stay in touch with Sal and Rachel and make a difference in the lives of local animals.
