Broadcasting on DAB, smart speakers, the free Barnsley Radio app, and RadioPlayer, the station aims to reconnect Barnsley with truly local radio.

The presenter line-up features voices from current and former BBC and commercial stations across Yorkshire, many of whom have strong links to the town. Bosses say the station will draw inspiration from Dearne FM, Barnsley’s former local station, which was rebranded to Greatest Hits Radio in 2020.

Programme Director Stewart Nicholson said:

“We’ve seen the incredible appetite for local radio in Rotherham and Doncaster. Now it’s Barnsley’s turn. We’re passionate about putting local back on the dial – with shows that sound like Barnsley and talk about what matters here.”

Barnsley Radio are also promising to champion local musicians, and give a platform to the voices and stories that matter most to the town and wider borough.

This week, the station have also confirmed the return to Barnsley of Matt Foister at Breakfast, and Leanne Dundas, who will take on the brand new drivetime show from 4pm.

This marks the second radio station to announce its arrival in Barnsley. Community station Barnsley Essentials Radio have also announced their arrival in the town, with a base at Barnsley Civic, and promises to offer another platform for local voices to shout about our town.
